But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died.

And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

For the son despises his father. The daughter defies her mother. The daughter in law defies her mother in law. Your enemies are right in your own household!

Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? I hurt with the hurt of my people. I mourn and am overcome with grief.

Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!

‘ I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter in law against her mother in law.Your enemies will be right in your own household!’

But now their faces are blacker than soot. No one recognizes them in the streets. Their skin sticks to their bones; it is as dry and hard as wood.

But you are now being persecuted by those who want you to keep the law, just as Ishmael, the child born by human effort, persecuted Isaac, the child born by the power of the Spirit.

My skin has turned dark, and my bones burn with fever.
