波阿斯對路得說：“女兒啊，聽我說，不要到別人田裡去撿麥穗，也不要離開這裡，要常常與我的女傭人在一起。

“兄弟住在一起，他們中間如果有一個死了，沒有留下兒子，死者的妻子就不可出嫁外人；她丈夫的兄弟要向她盡兄弟的本分，娶她為妻，和她同房。她所生的長子要歸亡兄的名下，免得他的名字從以色列中被塗抹了。那人如果不喜歡娶他兄弟的妻子，他兄弟的妻子就要到城門去見長老，說：‘我丈夫的兄弟不肯在以色列中為自己的哥哥立名，不肯對我盡兄弟的本分。’本城的長老就要把那人叫來，對他說明；如果他堅持說：‘我不樂意娶她’，他哥哥的妻子就要當著長老的面前，走到那人跟前，脫去他腳上的鞋子，吐唾沫在他的臉上，說：‘那不為自己哥哥建立家室的，人人都要這樣對待他。’從此，在以色列中他的名字（“他的名字”或譯：“他的家的名字”）必稱為‘脫鞋者之家’。

拿俄米對媳婦說：“願不斷施慈愛給活人和死人的耶和華賜福給他。”拿俄米又對她說：“這個人是我們的親人，有買贖權的一位近親。”摩押女子路得說：“他還告訴我：‘緊跟著我的僕人撿麥穗，直到全部收割完畢。’”拿俄米對媳婦路得說：“我女兒啊，這樣才好，要與他的女傭人一起去，免得在別人的田裡遭受敵視。”她就緊跟著波阿斯的女傭人撿麥穗，直到大麥和小麥都收割好了。路得一直與婆婆住在一起。

拿俄米的丈夫以利米勒有個同族的親戚，名叫波阿斯，是個大財主。

因為那位使人成聖的，和那些得到成聖的，同是出於一個源頭；所以他稱他們為弟兄也不以為恥。他說：“我要向我的弟兄宣揚你的名，我要在聚會中歌頌你。”又說：“我要信靠他。”又說：“看哪，我和神所賜給我的孩子們。”孩子們既然同有血肉之體，他自己也照樣成為血肉之體，為要藉著死，消滅那掌握死權的魔鬼，
