He called to her and asked,“ Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”As she was going to get it, he called,“ And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”“ As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied,“ I don’t have any bread— only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it— and die.”

In those days Israel had no king. Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months,

“ For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments— sword and famine and wild beasts and plague— to kill its men and their animals!

I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.
