他領受了割禮為象徵，做沒受割禮時因信而稱的義的印記，好使他做一切沒受割禮而信的人的父，（叫義可以算為他們的），也做受割禮的人的父，做那些不但受割禮、並且照我們祖宗亞伯拉罕沒受割禮時的信心之腳蹤而按規矩行的人的父。向亞伯拉罕或他後裔發的那應許、使他承受得世界為產業的、並不是憑着律法，乃是憑着信心而稱的義。假使本着律法的人才是承受產業的，那麼信就落了空，應許也就失效了。因為律法能使上帝的義怒起作用；哪裏沒有律法，哪裏就沒有犯法的事。就是因為這個緣故、所以才本着信、要使應許確定，按照恩典、給予一切後裔，不但給予那本着律法的人，也給予那本着亞伯拉罕之信的人。

永恆主在萬族之民戶籍冊上記着：『這一位是生於那裏的。』（細拉）

那裏有記着說：亞伯拉罕有兩個兒子，一個出於使女，一個出於自主的婦人。那出於使女的、是只按普通程序生的、而那出於自主婦人的、卻是憑着應許生的。這些都是有寓意的：那兩個婦人就是兩個約：一個屬於西乃山，生子在奴役中，就是夏甲。西乃是一座山、在亞拉伯，與今世的耶路撒冷地位相當；她同她兒女都做奴僕。但那在上的耶路撒冷卻是自主的；她乃是我們的母親。因為經上記着說：『你這不能生育、沒有生產過的啊，你歡樂哦！你這沒受過產難的啊，你突破靜寂而呼喊哦？因為淒涼獨居的婦人、比有丈夫的、兒女還多。』你們呢、弟兄們，你們照以撒的樣子、就是應許的兒女啊。但當時那只按普通程序生的怎樣逼迫那按靈生的，如今也這樣。然而經上是怎麼說的呢？經上是說：『把使女和她兒子趕出去吧；因為使女的兒子是斷不可以跟自主婦人的兒子一同承繼產業的。』所以弟兄們，我們不是使女的兒女，我們乃是自主婦人的兒女了。

凡蒙上帝之靈帶領的、就是上帝的兒子。

我們不是被他當作外人麼？因為他賣了我們，也拚命吞喫了你娶我們的聘銀。

必有後裔要事奉他；關於主的事，必有人向後代敘說；
