The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well,and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring— not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

The Lord records as he registers the peoples,“ This one was born there.” Selah

For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman.But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar.Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.For it is written,“ Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.”Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.But what does the Scripture say?“ Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.”So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has indeed devoured our money.

Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
