They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises.

It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel,

The priests could not carry out their duties because of the cloud; the LORD’s glory filled his temple.

Now the first covenant, in fact, had regulations for worship and its earthly sanctuary.

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth.

You are children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald for the sake of the dead.

For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”

He took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said,“ We are willing to do and obey all that the LORD has spoken.”So Moses took the blood and splashed it on the people and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry,“ Abba, Father.”

Indeed, the people of Israel are my dear children. They are the children I take delight in. For even though I must often rebuke them, I still remember them with fondness. So I am deeply moved with pity for them and will surely have compassion on them. I, the LORD, affirm it!

Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain,“ Thus you will tell the house of Jacob, and declare to the people of Israel:‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I lifted you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.”

This is my requirement that you and your descendants after you must keep: Every male among you must be circumcised.

“ Listen to me, O family of Jacob, all you who are left from the family of Israel, you who have been carried from birth, you who have been supported from the time you left the womb.

Actually, there are many advantages. First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them.

But now Jesus has obtained a superior ministry, since the covenant that he mediates is also better and is enacted on better promises.For if that first covenant had been faultless, no one would have looked for a second one.But showing its fault, God says to them,“ Look, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will complete a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.“ It will not be like the covenant that I made with their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant and I had no regard for them, says the Lord.“ For this is the covenant that I will establish with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and I will inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God and they will be my people.

“ Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went on a journey.

That day the LORD made a covenant with Abram:“ To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River–

And after the second curtain there was a tent called the holy of holies.

He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy.

Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the atonement lid that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. Thus he spoke to him.

For he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago,that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us.He has done this to show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant–the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham. This oath grantsthat we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, may serve him without fear,in holiness and righteousness before him for as long as we live.

Certainly God is good to Israel, and to those whose motives are pure!

I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised.

“ You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend,

May your servants see your work! May their sons see your majesty!

I gave them my statutes and revealed my regulations to them. The one who carries them out will live by them!I also gave them my Sabbaths as a reminder of our relationship, so that they would know that I, the LORD, sanctify them.

You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham,‘ And in your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.’God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities.”

He has helped his servant Israel, remembering his mercy,as he promised to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

The LORD said to Moses,“ Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”

I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

Please remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, the covenant of the priesthood, and the Levites.

When Israel was a young man, I loved him like a son, and I summoned my son out of Egypt.

When you enter the land that the LORD will give to you, just as he said, you must observe this ceremony.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.

And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm,‘ You are my Son; today I have fathered you.’

The LORD said,“ I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant:

“ You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You provided them with just judgments, true laws, and good statutes and commandments.You made known to them your holy Sabbath; you issued commandments, statutes, and law to them through Moses your servant.

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

The sun will no longer supply light for you by day, nor will the moon’s brightness shine on you; the LORD will be your permanent source of light– the splendor of your God will shine upon you.

Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed,“ Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”

“ But I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land,” says the LORD.“ I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. I will be their God and they will be my people.

“ No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him,“ but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”

They served only for matters of food and drink and various washings; they are external regulations imposed until the new order came.

He built a hedge around it, removed its stones, and planted a vine. He built a tower in the middle of it, and constructed a winepress. He waited for it to produce edible grapes, but it produced sour ones instead.

It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,

She named the boy Ichabod, saying,“ The glory has departed from Israel,” referring to the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.She said,“ The glory has departed from Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.”

They will come back shedding tears of contrition. I will bring them back praying prayers of repentance. I will lead them besides streams of water, along smooth paths where they will never stumble. I will do this because I am Israel’s father; Ephraim is my firstborn son.’”

“ I, LORD, make the following promise:‘ I have made a covenant with the day and with the night that they will always come at their proper times. Only if you people could break that covenantcould my covenant with my servant David and my covenant with the Levites ever be broken. So David will by all means always have a descendant to occupy his throne as king and the Levites will by all means always have priests who will minister before me.I will make the children who follow one another in the line of my servant David very numerous. I will also make the Levites who minister before me very numerous. I will make them all as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sands which are on the seashore.’”The LORD spoke still further to Jeremiah.“ You have surely noticed what these people are saying, haven’t you? They are saying,‘ The LORD has rejected the two families of Israel and Judah that he chose.’ So they have little regard that my people will ever again be a nation.But I, the LORD, make the following promise: I have made a covenant governing the coming of day and night. I have established the fixed laws governing heaven and earth.

Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,saying,“ Surely I will bless you greatly and multiply your descendants abundantly.”And so by persevering, Abraham inherited the promise.For people swear by something greater than themselves, and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute.In the same way God wanted to demonstrate more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, and so he intervened with an oath,

( 28:69) These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
