何以故？以其求之不以信、而以法耳。

此何故耶、曰不由於信、而由於行、乃蹶於躓人之石、

曰、求之不以信主、惟以行法、其蹶此石上、

此何故、曰、因非由信而求、乃由行而求、蓋蹶於此蹶人之石上、

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

Why not? Because they tried to do it without faith. They tried to be right with God by what they did. They tripped over the stone that causes people to trip and fall.

Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.

Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

又曰：『此為躓石、觸之必蹶。』若輩不順天主之道、宜其蹶也、亦定命耳。

而吾人所傳揚者、乃一被釘於十字架之基督耳。此於猶太人為躓石、於異邦人為愚妄；

遂疑忌耶穌。耶穌曰：『先知之不見尊、其惟在故鄉族中歟。』

凡不予疑怪者、福哉斯人！』

西默翁祝之、謂聖母曰：『此子之誕生、義塞眾人之禍福興亡繫焉。斯天下之正鵠、而又眾矢之的也。

『能信奉主耶穌、則爾舉家當蒙救恩。』乃以主道示之、及其家人。當夜獄吏為二人濯傷、即率家人受洗；且迎之於家、具餐以待、咸以奉信天主、神樂洋溢。天既曙、有司遣隸傳語、釋此二人。

然則義塞人之躓也、將一厥而不振乎？無是理也！夫因彼之顛墜、救恩乃普及於異邦之人、是亦所以激發之耳。

人證吾且信之、況天主之證乎？蓋天主已為其聖子作證矣。因是、凡信天主聖子者、自有作證者寓乎其心。（或可譯其心中自有印證待攷）凡不置信於天主之證者、不啻以妄證之罪加諸天主矣。無他、天主為其聖子作證、而彼人竟莫之信也。其證云何？曰：天主已賜吾人以永生；而永生即在其聖子之身。故有聖子者、有永生；無聖子者、無永生。

蓋既昧於天主之義、故惟求自立其義、而不服膺天主之義矣。

是故人之為嗣、所緣惟信德、所恃惟慈惠；庶幾天主之恩諾、能普被眾裔、不僅限於屬法者亦且兼及具有亞伯漢之信德者。

有人來謁曰：『夫子吾當行何善、始可享永生？』耶穌曰：『奚為以善見詢？善者惟一。雖然、爾欲臻於常生、則守誡尚矣。』曰：『何誡？』曰：『毋殺人、毋姦淫、毋偷盜、毋妄證、敬爾父母、愛人如己。』少年曰：『凡此我皆自幼習行；敢問尚虧何事？』

勸爾勿務易腐之糧、宜務永生之糧、此糧惟受天主聖父印證之人子、能賜於爾。』眾問曰：『如之何始可務天主之務？』耶穌對曰：『能信天主所遣者、斯誠天主之務矣。』
