此何故耶、曰不由於信、而由於行、乃蹶於躓人之石、

曰、求之不以信主、惟以行法、其蹶此石上、

此何故、曰、因非由信而求、乃由行而求、蓋蹶於此蹶人之石上、

何以故？以其求之不以信、而以法耳。

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

Why not? Because they tried to do it without faith. They tried to be right with God by what they did. They tripped over the stone that causes people to trip and fall.

Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

Wherefore? Because[ they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

且為躓石、為礙磐、以其背道而蹶焉、此亦預定者也、

但我儕宣釘十架之基督、於猶太人則為礙、於異邦人則為愚、

遂厭棄之、耶穌曰、先知在故土室家外、莫不尊焉、

凡不我棄者福矣、○

西面祝之、謂其母馬利亞曰、此子之立、致以色列多人興衰、亦為受誹之兆、

導之出、曰、主、我當何為而得救、曰、信主耶穌、爾與爾家必得救矣、遂以主道語之、及凡在其家者、是夜是時、獄吏攜二人濯其傷、與其家人即受洗焉、遂延之入室、設席、既信上帝、舉家喜甚、○

然則彼蹶至於傾陷乎、非也、乃以其過犯而拯及異邦、致發其憤也、

夫人之證、我若受之、則上帝之證為尤大、此上帝之證、即證其子也、信上帝子者、在己有證、不信上帝者、則以之為誑、因不信上帝為其子之證也、其證即上帝以永生賜我儕、而此生在其子也、有子者則有生、未有上帝子者、未有生也、○

蓋不識上帝之義、而求立己之義、故不服上帝之義也、

故由乎信、而依乎恩、致堅所許於諸裔、不第於宗律者、亦於宗亞伯拉罕之信者、亞伯拉罕於所信之上帝前、為我眾之父、

有少者就之曰、師乎、我當行何善、以獲永生、曰、胡為以善問我、善者一而已矣、爾欲入生、則當守誡、曰、何誡乎、耶穌曰、勿殺、勿淫、勿竊、勿妄敬、證爾父母、愛鄰如己、少者曰、凡此我嘗守之矣、尚有何缺乎、

勿為將壞之糧而勞、宜為存至永生之糧而勞、即人子將予爾者、蓋父上帝已印之矣、眾曰、我儕當何為以作上帝之工乎、耶穌曰、信其所遣者、即上帝之工也、
