此何故耶、曰不由於信、而由於行、乃蹶於躓人之石、

曰、求之不以信主、惟以行法、其蹶此石上、

此何故、曰、因非由信而求、乃由行而求、蓋蹶於此蹶人之石上、

何以故？以其求之不以信、而以法耳。

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

Why not? Because they tried to do it without faith. They tried to be right with God by what they did. They tripped over the stone that causes people to trip and fall.

Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

and A stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this.

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.

And they were offended by him. Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his household.”

and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”

Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary,“ Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed—

He escorted them out and said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They said,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved— you and your household.”And they spoke the word of the Lord to him along with everyone in his house.He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had come to believe in God with his entire household.

I ask, then, have they stumbled so as to fall? Absolutely not! On the contrary, by their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.

If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony is greater, because it is God’s testimony that he has given about his Son.The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about his Son.And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.The one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness.

This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants— not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.

Just then someone came up and asked him,“ Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?”“ Why do you ask me about what is good?” he said to him.“ There is only one who is good. If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” he asked him. Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness;honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself.“ I have kept all these,” the young man told him.“ What do I still lack?”

Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set his seal of approval on him.”“ What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked.Jesus replied,“ This is the work of God— that you believe in the one he has sent.”
