何以故？以其求之不以信、而以法耳。

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. (niv)

Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring— not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. (niv)
