Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

此何故耶、曰不由於信、而由於行、乃蹶於躓人之石、

曰、求之不以信主、惟以行法、其蹶此石上、

此何故、曰、因非由信而求、乃由行而求、蓋蹶於此蹶人之石上、

何以故？以其求之不以信、而以法耳。

Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for the witness of God is this, that he hath borne witness concerning his Son.He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in him: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he hath not believed in the witness that God hath borne concerning his Son.And the witness is this, that God gave unto us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.He that hath the Son hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.

For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all

Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him the Father, even God, hath sealed.They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God?Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
