原來我們這暫時、輕微的患難，正為我們帶來極重無比、永恆的榮耀。我們所注重的不是看得見的，而是看不見的；因為看得見的是暫時的，看不見的卻是永恆的。

相反，你們既然在基督的苦難上有份，就應該照此歡喜，好使你們在他榮耀顯現的時候，也可以歡喜、快樂。

你們藉著信，在神的大能中蒙保守，以至於那預備好要在末世顯現的救恩。為此，你們歡欣跳躍，但如今必須在種種試煉中暫時憂傷，好讓你們的信仰經過考驗，就比那被火煉過仍然會朽壞的金子更加寶貴，能在耶穌基督顯現的時候，被看為是可以得著稱讚、榮耀和尊貴的。

但是我不把自己的生命看為寶貴，為要跑盡我該跑的路程，完成從主耶穌所領受的服事工作，為神恩典的福音鄭重地做見證。

也要使你們這些受患難的人與我們一同得到安息。神要在烈火中報應那些不認識神的人，以及那些不順從我們主耶穌福音的人；他們將受到刑罰，就是永遠的滅亡，從主面前被隔絕，離開他權能的榮耀。在那日，主來臨的時候，要藉著他的聖徒得著榮耀，又藉著所有的信徒令人驚奇——因為你們相信了我們對你們所做的見證。為此，我們也常常為你們禱告：願我們的神把你們看為配得他的召喚，並且以他的大能成全你們一切美好的心願和一切信仰的行為，好使我們主耶穌的名，照著我們的神和主耶穌基督的恩典，因你們得著榮耀，你們也因他得著榮耀。

因此，你們要約束自己的意念，要謹慎，要把盼望完全寄託在耶穌基督顯現時帶給你們的恩典上。

基督是你們的生命，當他顯現的時候，你們那時也就和他一同在榮耀裡顯現。

「當人們因我的緣故責罵你們、逼迫你們、用各種捏造出來的惡事毀謗你們的時候，你們就是蒙福的。你們當歡喜，當快樂，因為你們在天上的報償是大的。要知道，那些人也這樣逼迫了在你們以前的先知們。

他寧願選擇與神的子民同受虐待，也不願享受暫時的罪中之樂。他把為基督受的責罵看做是比埃及的財寶更大的財富，因為他注目那將來的報償。

為此，神也藉著我們的福音召喚了你們，使你們獲得我們主耶穌基督的榮耀。

所以，我這同做長老的、做基督苦難見證人的、也在那將要顯現的榮耀中有份的，我懇求你們中間的長老們：

有些婦女得回了那些從死人中復活的親人；有些人受酷刑至死也不肯接受釋放，為要得到更美好的復活；
