And I was once alive apart from the law, but with the coming of the commandment sin became alive

For all who rely on doing the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written,“ Cursed is everyone who does not keep on doing everything written in the book of the law.”

But now we have been released from the law, because we have died to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code.

So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.For I delight in the law of God in my inner being.But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is by the law:“ The one who does these things will live by them.”

because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God.

For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it I died.

For the one who obeys the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.For he who said,“ Do not commit adultery,” also said,“ Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a violator of the law.

Jesus also told this parable to some who were confident that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else.“ Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself like this:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other people: extortionists, unrighteous people, adulterers– or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God.

The young man said to him,“ I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws. What do I still lack?”

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”He said to him,“ What is written in the law? How do you understand it?”The expert answered,“ Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”Jesus said to him,“ You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. I lived according to the law as a Pharisee.In my zeal for God I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless.

For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me.

Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition.”He also said to them,“ You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother,‘ Whatever help you would have received from me is corban’( that is, a gift for God),then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.”

The man replied,“ I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws since my youth.”

“ You have heard that it was said to an older generation,‘ Do not murder,’ and‘ whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.’But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says‘ Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell.So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.Reach agreement quickly with your accuser while on the way to court, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the warden, and you will be thrown into prison.I tell you the truth, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny!

but he answered his father,‘ Look! These many years I have worked like a slave for you, and I never disobeyed your commands. Yet you never gave me even a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends!

For God said,‘ Honor your father and mother’ and‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say,‘ If someone tells his father or mother,“ Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,”he does not need to honor his father.’ You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.
