What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said,“ You shall not covet.”

然則將何言耶、律豈罪乎、非也、非由律則我未嘗知罪、如律不言毋欲、則我不知欲、

然則何以言之、律法豈惡之因乎、曰、不然、非法無以見惡、蓋律法不禁欲、吾末由識欲、

然則何言、律法即罪乎、非也、然非由律法、我不識罪、律法若不云勿貪、則我不識貪、

於此吾人更有何說？將謂法即罪乎？無是理也！法非罪、乃所以燭吾之罪耳。法若不曰「毋淫、」則吾將不知淫之為淫矣。

What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What should we say then? That the law is sinful? Not at all! Yet I wouldn’t have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law says,“ Do not want what belongs to other people.”( Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) If the law hadn’t said that, I would not have known what it was like to want what belongs to others.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”

What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Far from it! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said,“ You shall not covet.”

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.

“ You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

‘ You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’

because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

For the commandments,“ You shall not commit adultery,”“ You shall not murder,”“ You shall not steal,”“ You shall not bear false witness,”“ You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely,“ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath?( I speak as a man.)

But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints;

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

And He said to them,“ Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh?

I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel.

For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world— the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life— is not of the Father but is of the world.

Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

And it came to pass after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying,“ Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near, next to my house; and for it I will give you a vineyard better than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.”But Naboth said to Ahab,“ The Lord forbid that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”So Ahab went into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food.

not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
