然則何以言之、律法豈惡之因乎、曰、不然、非法無以見惡、蓋律法不禁欲、吾末由識欲、

然則何言、律法即罪乎、非也、然非由律法、我不識罪、律法若不云勿貪、則我不識貪、

於此吾人更有何說？將謂法即罪乎？無是理也！法非罪、乃所以燭吾之罪耳。法若不曰「毋淫、」則吾將不知淫之為淫矣。

What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What should we say then? That the law is sinful? Not at all! Yet I wouldn’t have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law says,“ Do not want what belongs to other people.”( Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) If the law hadn’t said that, I would not have known what it was like to want what belongs to others.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”

What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

because by the works of the Law none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes knowledge of sin.

But sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

“ You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male slave, or his female slave, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

‘ You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.’

for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law;

For this,“ You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying,“ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold; Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.Moreover, Your servant is warned by them; In keeping them there is great reward.Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults.

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He?( I am speaking from a human viewpoint.)

But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints;

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.

Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

They covet fields, so they seize them; And houses, so they take them. They exploit a man and his house, A person and his inheritance.

but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes.

For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were brought to light by the Law, were at work in the parts of our body to bear fruit for death.

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Now it came about after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab, the king of Samaria.And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying,“ Give me your vineyard so that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard in place of it; if you prefer, I will give you what it is worth in money.”But Naboth said to Ahab,“ The Lord forbid me that I would give you the inheritance of my fathers!”So Ahab entered his house sullen and furious because of the answer that Naboth the Jezreelite had given to him, since he said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned his face away, and ate no food.

not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it, killed me.

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under the Law but under grace? Far from it!
