然則何言、律法即罪乎、非也、然非由律法、我不識罪、律法若不云勿貪、則我不識貪、

於此吾人更有何說？將謂法即罪乎？無是理也！法非罪、乃所以燭吾之罪耳。法若不曰「毋淫、」則吾將不知淫之為淫矣。

What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What should we say then? That the law is sinful? Not at all! Yet I wouldn’t have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law says,“ Do not want what belongs to other people.”( Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) If the law hadn’t said that, I would not have known what it was like to want what belongs to others.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”

What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Far from it! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said,“ You shall not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law[ is] the knowledge of sin.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin[ was] dead.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that[ is] thy neighbour’s.

Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any[ thing] that[ is] thy neighbour’s.

Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is,[ there is] no transgression.

The sting of death[ is] sin; and the strength of sin[ is] the law.

For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if[ there be] any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The law of the LORD[ is] perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD[ is] sure, making wise the simple.The statutes of the LORD[ are] right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD[ is] pure, enlightening the eyes.The fear of the LORD[ is] clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD[ are] true[ and] righteous altogether.More to be desired[ are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.Moreover by them is thy servant warned:[ and] in keeping of them[ there is] great reward.Who can understand[ his] errors? cleanse thou me from secret[ faults].

But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say?[ Is] God unrighteous who taketh vengeance?( I speak as a man)

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

And when the woman saw that the tree[ was] good for food, and that it[ was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make[ one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman[ was] very beautiful to look upon.

I have seen an end of all perfection:[ but] thy commandment[ is] exceeding broad.

When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they[ are] hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

And they covet fields, and take[ them] by violence; and houses, and take[ them] away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

Love not the world, neither the things[ that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that[ is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

And it came to pass after these things,[ that] Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which[ was] in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it[ is] near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it;[ or], if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew[ me].

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
