For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about— but not before God.

Did he become right with God because of something he did? If so, he could brag about it. But he couldn’t brag to God.

If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way.

For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

and when the Egyptians see you, they will say,‘ This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live.Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”

Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him,“ What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.”And Abimelech said to Abraham,“ What did you see, that you did this thing?”Abraham said,“ I did it because I thought,‘ There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.And when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her,‘ This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me,“ He is my brother.”’”

So Pharaoh called Abram and said,“ What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God.

We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart.

so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

And he said to me,“ Go in, and see the vile abominations that they are committing here.”

For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven— whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows.And I know that this man was caught up into paradise— whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses—though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.But he said to me,“ My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do.
