( as it is written,“ I have made you the father of many nations”). He is our father in the presence of God whom he believed– the God who makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do.

蓋亞伯漢實為萬民之父。經曰：『吾使爾為萬邦之父』此之謂也。顧其所以能在天主之前為眾人之父者、亦曰篤信天主而已。蓋惟天主能予死者以生命、而出萬有於無有耳。

As it is written:“ I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed— the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

It is written,“ I have made you a father of many nations.”( Genesis 17:5) God considers Abraham to be our father. The God that Abraham believed in gives life to the dead. Abraham’s God also creates things that did not exist before.

as it is written,“ I have made you the father of many nations”— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him,“ I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.

For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.

The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

Moreover if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through his Spirit who lives in you.

And although you were dead in your transgressions and sins,in which you formerly lived according to this world’s present path, according to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience,among whom all of us also formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath even as the rest…But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us,even though we were dead in transgressions, made us alive together with Christ– by grace you are saved!–

You once were not a people, but now you are God’s people. You were shown no mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I tell you the solemn truth, a time is coming– and is now here– when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

Indeed you will go out with joy; you will be led along in peace; the mountains and hills will give a joyful shout before you, and all the trees in the field will clap their hands.

Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too!

So in fact children were fathered by one man– and this one as good as dead– like the number of stars in the sky and like the innumerable grains of sand on the seashore.

I charge you before God who gives life to all things and Christ Jesus who made his good confession before Pontius Pilate,

Look, they come from far away! Look, some come from the north and west, and others from the land of Sinim!

For if Abraham was declared righteous by the works of the law, he has something to boast about– but not before God.

Yes, my hand founded the earth; my right hand spread out the sky. I summon them; they stand together.

So also it is written,“ The first man, Adam, became a living person”; the last Adam became a life- giving spirit.

I will say to the north,‘ Hand them over!’ and to the south,‘ Don’t hold any back!’ Bring my sons from distant lands, and my daughters from the remote regions of the earth,

May the sovereign God bless you! May he make you fruitful and give you a multitude of descendants! Then you will become a large nation.

and don’t think you can say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will indeed bless him, make him fruitful, and give him a multitude of descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes; I will make him into a great nation.

Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah.She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. Abraham became the father of Isaac.When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.When the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter, a man of the open fields, but Jacob was an even-tempered man, living in tents.Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.Now Jacob cooked some stew, and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished.So Esau said to Jacob,“ Feed me some of the red stuff– yes, this red stuff– because I’m starving!”( That is why he was also called Edom.)But Jacob replied,“ First sell me your birthright.”“ Look,” said Esau,“ I’m about to die! What use is the birthright to me?”But Jacob said,“ Swear an oath to me now.” So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew; Esau ate and drank, then got up and went out. So Esau despised his birthright.
