我今且按人言言之曰、若我儕之不義、顯彰天主之義、則何言哉、天主施刑、可謂其不義乎、

曰：若人之不義、適足彰天主之義、則就人情言之、吾將何說、豈主之譴怒為不義乎？

Doesn’t the fact that we are wrong prove more clearly that God is right? Then what can we say? Can we say that God is not fair when he brings his anger down on us? As you can tell, I am just using human ways of thinking.

“ But,” some might say,“ our sinfulness serves a good purpose, for it helps people see how righteous God is. Isn’t it unfair, then, for him to punish us?”( This is merely a human point of view.)

I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.

Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same?

“‘ See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.For I lift up my hand to heaven and swear, As I live forever,if I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and will repay those who hate me.I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh— with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.’“ Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of his children and takes vengeance on his adversaries. He repays those who hate him and cleanses his people’s land.”

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?

But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.You will say to me then,“ Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder,“ Why have you made me like this?”

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written,“ Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised,“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

O Lord, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth!Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!

But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner?

The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.Mankind will say,“ Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.”

since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you,and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angelsin flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

As it is written,“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means!

And I heard the angel in charge of the waters say,“ Just are you, O Holy One, who is and who was, for you brought these judgments.For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!”And I heard the altar saying,“ Yes, Lord God the Almighty, true and just are your judgments!”

Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying,“ Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!

Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!”

whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hopethat the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
