Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.

這樣，我們是憑着信廢掉律法麼？斷乎不是；我們倒是叫律法立定呢。

那麼，我們是藉著信廢掉律法嗎？絕對不是！反而確立了律法。

然則我儕以信廢律乎、曰、非也、乃堅律耳、

然則以信廢法乎、曰、否、更守法焉、

然則我儕因信廢律法乎、非也、乃堅定律法、

然則吾人以信德而廢律法乎？是又不然！此正吾人所以成全律法耳。

Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

Does faith make the law useless? Not at all! We agree with the law.

Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Do we then nullify the Law through faith? Far from it! On the contrary, we establish the Law.

Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

Do we then make the law of none effect through faith? God forbid: nay, we establish the law.

Do we then cancel the law through faith? Absolutely not! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! Instead we uphold the law.

Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

“ Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.

He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”But sin used this command to arouse all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power.At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life,and I died. So I discovered that the law’s commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead.Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me.But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.But how can that be? Did the law, which is good, cause my death? Of course not! Sin used what was good to bring about my condemnation to death. So we can see how terrible sin really is. It uses God’s good commands for its own evil purposes.So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin.

I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

Owe nothing to anyone— except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.For the commandments say,“ You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These— and other such commandments— are summed up in this one commandment:“ Love your neighbor as yourself.”Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.

Lord, it is time for you to act, for these evil people have violated your instructions.

If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless.

This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise.For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people.

When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ.

For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.

I love God’s law with all my heart.

For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law— I stopped trying to meet all its requirements— so that I might live for God.

But Jesus said,“ It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says,“ This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

Because he is righteous, the Lord has exalted his glorious law.

“ But I warn you— unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.

Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him,“ You will be proved right in what you say, and you will win your case in court.”

Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

“‘ How can you say,“ We are wise because we have the word of the Lord,” when your teachers have twisted it by writing lies?These wise teachers will fall into the trap of their own foolishness, for they have rejected the word of the Lord. Are they so wise after all?

I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures:“ Love your neighbor as yourself.”But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.For the same God who said,“ You must not commit adultery,” also said,“ You must not murder.” So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free.

But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,gentleness, and self control. There is no law against these things!

“ But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord.“ I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying,‘ You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord.“ And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”
