so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagoguesand greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.The greatest among you shall be your servant.Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the Lord and say,“ Is not the Lord in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us.”

And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating.

But to the wicked God says:“ What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.“ You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

He said to him,‘ I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

And he said to them,“ Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,‘“ Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”

For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances,that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.“ Behold, I strike my hand at the dishonest gain that you have made, and at the blood that has been in your midst.

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

He said to them,“ It is written,‘ My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,

And he said,“ Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
