For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Hearing the law does not make a person right with God. People are considered to be right with God only when they obey the law.

For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.

Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected.So the Scripture was fulfilled which says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

For circumcision indeed profits, if you are a doer of the law, but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for,“ The righteous will live by faith.”The law is not of faith, but,“ The man who does them will live by them.”

For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law,“ The one who does them will live by them.”

since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

It is not in heaven, that you should say,“ Who will go up for us to heaven, bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?”Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say,“ Who will go over the sea for us, bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?”But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

I gave them my statutes, and showed them my ordinances, which if a man does, he will live in them.

Moses called to all Israel, and said to them,“ Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears today, that you may learn them, and observe to do them.”

Don’t enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.

Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’“ Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand.The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell— and great was its fall.”

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, gives you.

For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.For what does the Scripture say?“ Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”He said to him,“ What is written in the law? How do you read it?”He answered,“ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”He said to him,“ You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”But he, desiring to justify himself, asked Jesus,“ Who is my neighbor?”

Hear therefore, Israel, and observe to do it, that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

But he answered them,“ My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God, and do it.”

“ As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk about you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak to one another, everyone to his brother, saying,‘ Please come and hear what the word is that comes out from Yahweh.’They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don’t do them.“ When this comes to pass— behold, it comes— then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
