For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Hearing the law does not make a person right with God. People are considered to be right with God only when they obey the law.

For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

For the hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified.

for it is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the Law who will be justified.

for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified;

For the hearers of the law are not righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be declared righteous.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.And so it happened just as the Scriptures say:“ Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.

Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”

The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile.

So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say,“ It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says,“ It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”

For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands.

There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.

Everyone who believes in him is made right in God’s sight— something the law of Moses could never do.

It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask,‘ Who will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask,‘ Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.

For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

There I gave them my decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them.

Moses called all the people of Israel together and said,“ Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!

Don’t put your servant on trial, for no one is innocent before you.

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

“ Not everyone who calls out to me,‘ Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.On judgment day many will say to me,‘ Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’But I will reply,‘ I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’“ Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

“ And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.

If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way.For the Scriptures tell us,“ Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned.But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.

I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question:“ Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”Jesus replied,“ What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”The man answered,“‘ You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And,‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ Right!” Jesus told him.“ Do this and you will live!”The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

Listen closely, Israel, and be careful to obey. Then all will go well with you, and you will have many children in the land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

Jesus replied,“ My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”

“ Son of man, your people talk about you in their houses and whisper about you at the doors. They say to each other,‘ Come on, let’s go hear the prophet tell us what the Lord is saying!’So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money.You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it!But when all these terrible things happen to them— as they certainly will— then they will know a prophet has been among them.”
