for it is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

居位者、上帝僕也、原以益爾、行惡宜畏之、以其為上帝僕、柄不徒操、刑加作惡之人、

秉權者、天主之僕也、原以益爾、爾若行惡、則誠可畏、蓋彼不徒操生殺之權、操生殺之權原文作文作操刀乃為天主之僕、嚴加刑於作惡之人、

總之、彼乃天主之臣僕、助爾為善者也。爾若為非作惡、斯誠可畏；蓋彼之佩劍、非徒然也。彼乃天主之有司、所以加威於作惡者之身、而持天下之平。

For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

The one in authority serves God for your good. But if you do wrong, watch out! Rulers don’t carry a sword for no reason at all. They serve God. And God is carrying out his anger through them. The ruler punishes anyone who does wrong.

He said to the judges,“ Consider what you are doing, for you do not judge for mankind but for the Lord who is with you when you render judgment.

For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.One who says to the wicked,“ You are righteous,” Peoples will curse him, nations will scold him;

And I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

The blood avenger himself shall put the murderer to death; he himself shall put him to death when he meets him.Now if he pushed him in hatred, or he threw something at him with malicious intent, and as a result he died,or if he struck him with his hand with hostility, and as a result he died, the one who struck him must be put to death; he is a murderer. The blood avenger shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.‘ But if he pushed him suddenly, without hostility, or threw any object at him without malicious intent,or had any deadly stone, and without looking he dropped it on him so that he died, while he was not his enemy nor was he seeking to harm him,then the congregation shall judge between the one who fatally struck the victim and the blood avenger in accordance with these ordinances.And the congregation shall save the one who committed manslaughter from the hand of the blood avenger, and the congregation shall return him to his city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.But if at any time he goes beyond the border of his city of refuge to which he flees,and the blood avenger finds him outside the border of his city of refuge, and the blood avenger kills him, he will not be guilty of bloodshed,

Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor, Obtain justice for the orphan, Plead for the widow’s case.

Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you to put you on the throne of Israel; because the Lord loves Israel forever, He made you king, to do justice and righteousness.”

These were the designated cities for all the sons of Israel and for the stranger who resides among them, so that whoever kills a person unintentionally may flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stands before the congregation.

Open your mouth for the people who cannot speak, For the rights of all the unfortunate.Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the poor and needy.

The fury of a king is like messengers of death; But a wise person will appease it.

A wise king scatters the wicked, And drives a threshing wheel over them.

and that no one violate the rights and take advantage of his brother or sister in the matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you previously and solemnly warned you.

The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion; One who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.

And I said,“ Hear now, you leaders of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know justice?You who hate good and love evil, Who tear off their skin from them And their flesh from their bones,Who eat the flesh of my people, Strip off their skin from them, Smash their bones, And chop them up as for the pot, And as meat in a cauldron!”Then they will cry out to the Lord, But He will not answer them. Instead, He will hide His face from them at that time Because they have practiced evil deeds.

How long will you judge unjustly And show partiality to the wicked? SelahVindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.Rescue the weak and needy; Save them from the hand of the wicked.

Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who despise justice And twist everything that is straight,

Her leaders within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and destroying lives in order to make dishonest profit.

A king who sits on the throne of justice Disperses all evil with his eyes.

They are fat, they are sleek, They also excel in deeds of wickedness; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the orphan, so that they may be successful; And they do not defend the rights of the poor.

I say,“ Keep the command of the king because of the oath before God.Do not be in a hurry to leave him. Do not join in an evil matter, for he will do whatever he pleases.”Since the word of the king is authoritative, who will say to him,“ What are you doing?”One who keeps a royal command experiences no trouble, for a wise heart knows the proper time and procedure.

Now if the avenger of blood pursues him, then they are not to hand the one who committed manslaughter over to him, since he struck his neighbor without premeditation and did not hate him previously.
