for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.

居位者、上帝僕也、原以益爾、行惡宜畏之、以其為上帝僕、柄不徒操、刑加作惡之人、

秉權者、天主之僕也、原以益爾、爾若行惡、則誠可畏、蓋彼不徒操生殺之權、操生殺之權原文作文作操刀乃為天主之僕、嚴加刑於作惡之人、

總之、彼乃天主之臣僕、助爾為善者也。爾若為非作惡、斯誠可畏；蓋彼之佩劍、非徒然也。彼乃天主之有司、所以加威於作惡者之身、而持天下之平。

For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

The one in authority serves God for your good. But if you do wrong, watch out! Rulers don’t carry a sword for no reason at all. They serve God. And God is carrying out his anger through them. The ruler punishes anyone who does wrong.

These also are sayings of the wise. Partiality in judging is not good.Whoever says to the wicked,“ You are in the right,” will be cursed by peoples, abhorred by nations,

And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and they shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.And if he pushed him out of hatred or hurled something at him, lying in wait, so that he died,or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.“ But if he pushed him suddenly without enmity, or hurled anything on him without lying in waitor used a stone that could cause death, and without seeing him dropped it on him, so that he died, though he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm,then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood, in accordance with these rules.And the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he had fled, and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the boundaries of his city of refuge to which he fled,and the avenger of blood finds him outside the boundaries of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood.

learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.

Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king, that you may execute justice and righteousness.”

These were the cities designated for all the people of Israel and for the stranger sojourning among them, that anyone who killed a person without intent could flee there, so that he might not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, till he stood before the congregation.

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

A king’s wrath is a messenger of death, and a wise man will appease it.

A wise king winnows the wicked and drives the wheel over them.

that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.

The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life.

And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?—you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones,who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron.Then they will cry to the Lord, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have made their deeds evil.

“ How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? SelahGive justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight,

Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain.

A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes.

they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.

I say: Keep the king’s command, because of God’s oath to him.Be not hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases.For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him,“ What are you doing?”Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way.

And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unknowingly, and did not hate him in the past.
