So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have— the ones God has chosen— but the hearts of the rest were hardened.

那麼便怎麼樣呢？以色列所切求的、他們竟然沒有得着；惟獨蒙揀選的人得着了。其餘的人就成了頑梗不化的；

所以怎麼樣呢？以色列人並沒有獲得他們所尋求的，蒙揀選的人卻獲得了，而其餘的人都成了剛硬的，

然則何耶、以色列所求未得、惟蒙選者得之、餘則頑耳、

曰、然則以色列人所求者、有不得乎、曰、選民得之、其餘則頑也、

是則何也、以色列人所求者未得、惟蒙選者得之、其餘則剛愎其心矣、

然則如何？曰：義塞之所求、未之得也、其中蒙恩者得之、而其餘則已成麻木不仁之徒矣。

What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,

What should we say then? The people of Israel did not receive what they wanted so badly. Those Israelites who were chosen did receive it. But the rest of the people were made stubborn.

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,

What then? Israel did not find what it was looking for, but the elect did find it. The rest were hardened,

What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened;

What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

What then? That which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened:

What then? Israel did not find what it was looking for, but the elect did find it. The rest were hardened,

What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was diligently seeking, but the elect obtained it. The rest were hardened,

What then? That which Israel seeks for, that he didn’t obtain, but the chosen ones obtained it, and the rest were hardened.

So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ.

But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded.Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.

He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies.Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.As for us, we can’t help but thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation— a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth.He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God’s grace— his undeserved kindness in choosing them.

But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.

What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods?

Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin.

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,‘ When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’

For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.

Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing.”

He does this to make the riches of his glory shine even brighter on those to whom he shows mercy, who were prepared in advance for glory.

“ The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”

Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!

But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.

Such stupidity and ignorance! Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see. Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.

“ Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

“ When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.

You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.

God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace.
