It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?

But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.

The Lord thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty is the army that obeys his command. The day of the Lord is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.

The great day of the Lord is near— near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.That day will be a day of wrath— a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness—a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.“ I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.” In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.Because of this, all hands will go limp, every heart will melt with fear.Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.See, the day of the Lord is coming— a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger— to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light.I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.I will make people scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the Lord Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.Like a hunted gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd, they will all return to their own people, they will flee to their native land.Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword.Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated.See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold.Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants, nor will they look with compassion on children.Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the pride and glory of the Babylonians, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.She will never be inhabited or lived in through all generations; there no nomads will pitch their tents, there no shepherds will rest their flocks.But desert creatures will lie there, jackals will fill her houses; there the owls will dwell, and there the wild goats will leap about.Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds, jackals her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand, and her days will not be prolonged.

The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small— and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling— these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
