Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

‘ But I have a few things against you. Some of your people follow the teaching of Balaam. He taught Balak to lead the people of Israel into sin. So they ate food that had been offered to statues of gods. And they committed sexual sins.

But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.

“ But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin.

But I have a few things against you, because you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.

But I have this against you: You tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and teaches and deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat meat sacrificed to idols.

They have gone astray by abandoning the straight path and have followed the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness

“ Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam’s advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the LORD in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the LORD’s community.

that you abstain from food offered to idols, from blood, from eating anything that has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. You will do well if you keep yourselves from these things. Farewell.”

While Israel was staying in the Acacia Grove, the people began to prostitute themselves with the women of Moab.The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor, and the LORD’s anger burned against Israel.

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, have plunged into Balaam’s error for profit, and have perished in Korah’s rebellion.

Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for Balaam son of Beor to curse you,

Consider the people of Israel. Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?What am I saying then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?No, but I do say that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons!You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord’s table and the table of demons.Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?“ Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial.“ Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.No one is to seek his own good, but the good of the other person.Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, without raising questions for the sake of conscience,since the earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it.If any of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions for the sake of conscience.But if someone says to you,“ This is food from a sacrifice,” do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience.I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged by another person’s conscience?If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I criticized because of something for which I give thanks?So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

Marriage is to be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, because God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

and A stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this.

With regard to the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter containing our decision that they should keep themselves from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what is strangled, and from sexual immorality.”

But the cowards, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars— their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

“ Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will do away with both of them. However, the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body? So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not!Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh.But anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.Flee sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body.

but instead we should write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from eating anything that has been strangled, and from blood.For since ancient times, Moses has had those who proclaim him in every city, and every Sabbath day he is read aloud in the synagogues.”

Along with the others slain by them, they killed the Midianite kings— Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

Therefore, let us no longer judge one another. Instead decide never to put a stumbling block or pitfall in the way of your brother or sister.

But because sexual immorality is so common, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband.

About eating food sacrificed to idols, then, we know that“ an idol is nothing in the world,” and that“ there is no God but one.”For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth— as there are many“ gods” and many“ lords”—yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some have been so used to idolatry up until now that when they eat food sacrificed to an idol, their conscience, being weak, is defiled.Food will not bring us close to God. We are not worse off if we don’t eat, and we are not better if we do eat.But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block to the weak.For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged to eat food offered to idols?So the weak person, the brother or sister for whom Christ died, is ruined by your knowledge.Now when you sin like this against brothers and sisters and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ.Therefore, if food causes my brother or sister to fall, I will never again eat meat, so that I won’t cause my brother or sister to fall.

Now if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts unjustly, and I put a stumbling block in front of him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die because of his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood.

Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am going to place stumbling blocks before these people; fathers and sons together will stumble over them; friends and neighbors will also perish.

He said,“ Build it up, build it up, prepare the way, remove every obstacle from my people’s way.”

Woe to the world because of offenses. For offenses will inevitably come, but woe to that person by whom the offense comes.

It is a good thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble.

Now I am going back to my people, but first, let me warn you what these people will do to your people in the future.”

Because they ministered to the house of Israel before their idols and became a sinful stumbling block to them, therefore I swore an oath against them”— this is the declaration of the Lord GOD—“ that they would bear the consequences of their iniquity.

Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.

And David says, Let their table become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a retribution to them.

but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.
