「哀哉大邑、昔以純紵紫絳為衣、金玉珠璣為飾；

那婦人披着紫袍和朱紅袍，用金子寶石珍珠為妝飾，手中執有金杯、滿盛着可憎之物、就是她淫亂之污穢。

『有一個財主素常穿着紫色袍和細麻布衣服，天天奢華宴樂。又有一個討飯的名叫拉撒路，躺在他的大門口，生着瘡；巴不得從財主桌子上掉下來的東西以得喫飽。不但如此，連狗還來餂他的瘡呢！那討飯的死了；他被天使帶走，到亞伯拉罕懷裏。那財主也死了，並且埋葬了。他在陰間、一直在痛苦中；一舉目竟望見亞伯拉罕在遠處，拉撒路在亞伯拉罕懷裏呢。他就呼喊說：「我祖亞伯拉罕哪，憐恤我吧！打發拉撒路用指頭尖兒蘸水涼涼我的舌頭吧；因為我在這火焰中、極其慘苦啊。」亞伯拉罕說：「孩子，你該回想你一生受盡了你的美物，而拉撒路也照樣受盡了禍患；如今他在這裏得慰藉，你倒受慘苦了！況且在一切之中、在我們和你們之間、還有個大空隙立着呢，叫那些想要從這邊過去到你們那邊的、無能為力；人也不能從那邊越過來到我們這邊。」財主說：「我祖啊，既然如此，就求你打發拉撒路到我父家去；因為我有五個弟兄；他可以鄭重警告他們，免得他們也來到這苦痛的地方啊。」亞伯拉罕說：「他們有摩西和神言人，讓他們聽他們吧。」他說：「我祖亞伯拉罕哪，不是的；若有人從死人中往他們那裏去，他們就會悔改的。」亞伯拉罕對他說：「他們若不聽摩西和神言人，就使有一個人從死人中復起了，他們還是不確信的。」』

因怕她的苦痛、都必在遠處站着說：『有禍啊！有禍啊！大城巴比倫！大有勢力的城啊，一時之間你受判罰的時候到了！』地上的商人也為她哭泣哀慟，因為再沒有人買他們的貨物了：

他們把塵土撒在頭上，哭泣哀慟喊着說：『有禍啊！有禍啊！那大城！那城裏頭凡有船在海中的、由她的珍寶而得財富的、有禍啊！一時之間她已變為荒涼了！
