事實上，在以利亞先知的時代，天乾旱無雨達三年半之久，遍地有大饑荒。那時，以色列國有許多寡婦，

有一位先知名叫以利亞，是基列的提斯比人。他對亞哈說：「我憑我事奉的以色列的上帝——永活的耶和華起誓，如果我不禱告，這幾年必沒有雨水和甘露。」

我們大禍臨頭了！誰能從這些大能的神明手中救我們？在曠野用各種災禍毀滅埃及人的就是這些神明。

所以祂說要用手杖擊打尼羅河水，使河水變成血，好叫你知道祂是耶和華。河裡的魚會死，河水會發臭，埃及人不能再喝尼羅河的水。』」耶和華對摩西說：「你告訴亞倫，讓他向埃及境內的各江河、溪流、池塘伸杖，使水變成血。埃及境內，包括木桶和石缸裡將到處是血。」摩西和亞倫就按著耶和華所吩咐的去做，亞倫在法老和埃及眾臣僕面前舉杖擊打尼羅河水，河水都變成了血。河裡的魚都死了，河水臭得不能飲用。埃及遍地都是血。可是，法老的巫師也一樣用邪術使水變成血。法老的心仍然剛硬，不肯聽從摩西和亞倫的話，正如耶和華所言。法老若無其事地轉身回宮去了。因為河水不能飲用，埃及人就在尼羅河兩岸掘井取水飲用。擊打河水後，七天過去了。

所以你們要彼此認罪，互相代禱，好得到醫治。義人的禱告有極大的力量和功效。以利亞先知和我們一樣同是血肉之軀，他懇切地祈求不要下雨，結果三年半沒有下雨。後來他再禱告求雨，天就降雨，地也長出了莊稼。

祂派遣祂的僕人摩西和祂揀選的亞倫，在埃及行神蹟，在含地行奇事。祂降下黑暗，使黑暗籠罩那裡；他們沒有違背祂的話。祂使埃及的水變成血，魚都死去；又使國中到處是青蛙，王宮禁院也不能倖免。祂一發命令，蒼蠅蜂擁而至，蝨子遍滿全境。祂使雨變成冰雹，遍地電光閃閃。祂擊倒他們的葡萄樹和無花果樹，摧毀他們境內的樹木。祂一發聲，就飛來無數蝗蟲和螞蚱，吃盡他們土地上的植物，吃盡他們田間的出產。祂又擊殺他們境內所有的長子，就是他們年輕力壯時生的長子。

耶和華對我說：「人子啊，主耶和華對以色列這樣說，『結局到了，以色列全境的結局到了！以色列，你的結局到了，我的怒氣必傾倒在你身上，我必按你的行為審判你，照你的一切惡行報應你。我必不顧惜你，也不憐憫你，我必按你的惡行報應你。這樣，你必知道我是耶和華。』」主耶和華說：「看啊，災禍來了，一場空前的災禍來了！結局到了，結局到了，你的結局到了！以色列境內的居民啊，惡運降臨了！時候已到，日子已近，山上一片恐慌，歡樂蕩然無存。我快要向你傾倒我的烈怒，發出我的怒氣。我必按你的行為審判你，照你一切的惡行報應你。我必不顧惜你，也不憐憫你，我必按你的惡行報應你。這樣，你就知道懲罰你的是我耶和華。「看啊，看啊，日子到了，大禍臨頭了！杖已經發芽，傲慢已經開花。暴行成了懲罰邪惡的杖，以色列人必沒有一個能夠存留，他們的財富和尊榮必不復存在。時候到了，日子近了，買主不要歡樂，賣主也不要憂愁，因為烈怒臨到了所有的人。
