“ Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last.

As Gabriel approached the place where I was standing, I became so terrified that I fell with my face to the ground.“ Son of man,” he said,“ you must understand that the events you have seen in your vision relate to the time of the end.”While he was speaking, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground. But Gabriel roused me with a touch and helped me to my feet.

Who has done such mighty deeds, summoning each new generation from the beginning of time? It is I, the Lord, the First and the Last. I alone am he.”

“ Write this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna. This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive:

So I was left there all alone to see this amazing vision. My strength left me, my face grew deathly pale, and I felt very weak.Then I heard the man speak, and when I heard the sound of his voice, I fainted and lay there with my face to the ground.Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees.

All around him was a glowing halo, like a rainbow shining in the clouds on a rainy day. This is what the glory of the Lord looked like to me. When I saw it, I fell face down on the ground, and I heard someone’s voice speaking to me.

“ I am the Alpha and the Omega— the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God.“ I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come— the Almighty One.”

How can someone like me, your servant, talk to you, my lord? My strength is gone, and I can hardly breathe.”Then the one who looked like a man touched me again, and I felt my strength returning.“ Don’t be afraid,” he said,“ for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” As he spoke these words to me, I suddenly felt stronger and said to him,“ Please speak to me, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”

Then he said,“ Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.

As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.Peter exclaimed,“ Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials— one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said,“ This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.Then Jesus came over and touched them.“ Get up,” he said.“ Don’t be afraid.”

When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked,but the angel said,“ Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

While he was speaking to me, I looked down at the ground, unable to say a word.

But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost!“ Why are you frightened?” he asked.“ Why are your hearts filled with doubt?Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.”

It said,“ Write in a book everything you see, and send it to the seven churches in the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”

Some time later, the Lord spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him,“ Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”

Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved— the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked,“ Lord, who will betray you?”

But Moses told the people,“ Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again.

The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.

“ Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them,“ for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”

I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us.

The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table.
