And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,“ Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”

Then the Lord said,“ I have pardoned, according to your word.But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice,shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,“ How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.Say to them,‘ As I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me,not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’

“ Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. But the Lord listened to me that time also.And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you; behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.”Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.

See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.

I said,‘ Surely you will fear me; you will accept correction. Then your dwelling would not be cut off according to all that I have appointed against you.’ But all the more they were eager to make all their deeds corrupt.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

But the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me,‘ Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.

So Aaron said to them,“ Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck down the people with a very great plague.Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had the craving.
