That is why the Holy Spirit says,“ Today when you hear his voice,don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness.There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.So I was angry with them, and I said,‘ Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’So in my anger I took an oath:‘ They will never enter my place of rest.’”

So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”

Remember what it says:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”

“ Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.

O God, why have you rejected us so long? Why is your anger so intense against the sheep of your own pasture?

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

“ Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.

But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said,“ This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”

“ So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock— his church, purchased with his own blood— over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.

Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you. Everything I say is right,

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.

“ I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.

Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation.Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock. O God, enthroned above the cherubim, display your radiant glory

Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

Then the earth will yield its harvests, and God, our God, will richly bless us.

“ Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said,“ He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,‘ Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’”

“ I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.

Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes.

“ But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord.“ I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise him— my father’s God, and I will exalt him!

In this way, they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them. And they will know that they, the people of Israel, are my people, says the Sovereign Lord.You are my flock, the sheep of my pasture. You are my people, and I am your God. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”

You must warn each other every day, while it is still“ today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
