  • Psalms 44:9-26
Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies. You cause us to turn back from the enemy; And those who hate us have taken spoils for themselves. You turn us over to be eaten like sheep, And have scattered us among the nations. You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale. You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, Of scoffing and ridicule to those around us.You make us a proverb among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples. All day long my dishonor is before me And I am covered with my humiliation,Because of the voice of one who taunts and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger. All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant. Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way,Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with deep darkness. If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god,Would God not find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.Wake Yourself up, why do You sleep, Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever. Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and oppression? For our souls have sunk down into the dust; Our bodies cling to the earth.Rise up, be our help, And redeem us because of Your mercy.

  • 2 Chronicles 12 1-2 Chronicles 12 12
When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the Law of the Lord. And it came about in King Rehoboam’s fifth year, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalemwith 1,200 chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. And the people who came with him from Egypt were innumerable: the Lubim, the Sukkiim, and the Ethiopians. And he captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ You have abandoned Me, so I also have abandoned you to Shishak.’ ”So the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said,“ The Lord is righteous.”When the Lord saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying,“ They have humbled themselves, so I will not destroy them; and I will grant them a little deliverance, and My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem by means of Shishak. But they will become his slaves, so that they may learn the difference between My service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.”So Shishak king of Egypt went up against Jerusalem, and he took the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s palace. He took everything; he even took the gold shields which Solomon had made. Then King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place and committed them to the care of the commanders of the guards who guarded the entrance of the king’s house. As often as the king entered the house of the Lord, the guards came and carried them and then brought them back into the guards’ room. And when he humbled himself, the anger of the Lord turned away from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and conditions were also good in Judah.
