“ I cannot keep from speaking. I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain.Am I a sea monster or a dragon that you must place me under guard?I think,‘ My bed will comfort me, and sleep will ease my misery,’but then you shatter me with dreams and terrify me with visions.I would rather be strangled— rather die than suffer like this.I hate my life and don’t want to go on living. Oh, leave me alone for my few remaining days.

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me.My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.

“ My spirit is crushed, and my life is nearly snuffed out. The grave is ready to receive me.

“ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, the man who is my partner,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.“ Strike down the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn against the lambs.

My days are over. My hopes have disappeared. My heart’s desires are broken.These men say that night is day; they claim that the darkness is light.What if I go to the grave and make my bed in darkness?What if I call the grave my father, and the maggot my mother or my sister?Where then is my hope? Can anyone find it?No, my hope will go down with me to the grave. We will rest together in the dust!”

But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.

I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.

He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
