角声越来越响，摩西说话，上帝以声音回答他。

这就是米利巴水，因以色列人与耶和华争闹，耶和华在他们面前显为圣。

并要在患难之日求告我，我必搭救你，你也要荣耀我。”

法老逼近的时候，以色列人举目，看哪，埃及人追来了，就非常惧怕，以色列人向耶和华哀求。

过了许多年，埃及王死了。以色列人因做苦工，就叹息哀求；他们因苦工所发出的哀声达于上帝。

破晓时分，耶和华从云柱、火柱中瞭望埃及的军兵，使埃及的军兵混乱。

关于利未，他说：‘愿你的土明和乌陵都在你的虔诚人那里。你在玛撒曾考验他，在米利巴水与他争论。

“因为他专心爱我，我要搭救他；因为他认识我的名，我要把他安置在高处。他若求告我，我就应允他；他在急难中，我与他同在；我要搭救他，使他尊贵。

那一日，耶和华拯救以色列脱离埃及人的手。以色列人看见埃及人死在海边。以色列人看见耶和华向埃及人所施展的大能，百姓就敬畏耶和华，并且信服耶和华和他的仆人摩西。

“亚伦要归到他祖先那里。他必不得进入我所赐给以色列人的地，因为你们在米利巴水的事上违背了我的指示。

百姓就与摩西争闹，说：“给我们水喝吧！”摩西对他们说：“你们为什么与我争闹呢？你们为什么试探耶和华呢？”百姓在那里口渴要喝水，就向摩西发怨言，说：“你为什么把我们从埃及领出来，使我们和我们的儿女，以及牲畜都渴死呢？”摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我要怎样对待这百姓呢？他们差一点就要拿石头打死我了。”耶和华对摩西说：“你带着以色列的几个长老，走在百姓前面，手里拿着你先前击打尼罗河的杖，去吧！看哪，我要在何烈的磐石那里，站在你面前。你要击打磐石，水就会从磐石流出来，给百姓喝。”摩西就在以色列的长老眼前这样做了。他给那地方起名叫玛撒，又叫米利巴，因为以色列人在那里争闹，并且试探耶和华，说：“耶和华是否在我们中间呢？”

众百姓见雷轰、闪电、角声、山上冒烟，百姓看见就都战抖，远远站着。他们对摩西说：“请你向我们说话，我们必听；不要让上帝向我们说话，免得我们死亡。”摩西对百姓说：“不要害怕；因为上帝降临是要考验你们，要你们敬畏他，不致犯罪。”于是百姓远远站着，但摩西却挨近上帝所在的幽暗中。
