And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.

This was the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the Lord, and He was hallowed among them.

Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.

Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians.

And of Levi he said:“ Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your holy one, Whom You tested at Massah, And with whom You contended at the waters of Meribah,

“ Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.

So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.

“ Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah.

Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said,“ Give us water, that we may drink.” So Moses said to them,“ Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the Lord?”And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said,“ Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying,“ What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!”And the Lord said to Moses,“ Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying,“ Is the Lord among us or not?”

Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off.Then they said to Moses,“ You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”And Moses said to the people,“ Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.”So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.
