And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

This[ is] the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.

And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

And of Levi he said,[ Let] thy Thummim and thy Urim[ be] with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah,[ and with] whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I[ will be] with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore[ is] this[ that] thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw[ it], they removed, and stood afar off.And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God[ was].
