And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.

These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.

and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.

And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic,

And of Levi he said,“ Give to Levi your Thummim, and your Urim to your godly one, whom you tested at Massah, with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah;

“ Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.

Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

“ Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said,“ Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them,“ Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said,“ Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”So Moses cried to the Lord,“ What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”And the Lord said to Moses,“ Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying,“ Is the Lord among us or not?”

Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far offand said to Moses,“ You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”Moses said to the people,“ Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
