角聲漸漸地高而又高，摩西就說話，神有聲音答應他。

這水名叫米利巴水，是因以色列人向耶和華爭鬧，耶和華就在他們面前顯為聖。

並要在患難之日求告我；我必搭救你，你也要榮耀我。

法老臨近的時候，以色列人舉目看見埃及人趕來，就甚懼怕，向耶和華哀求。

過了多年，埃及王死了。以色列人因做苦工，就歎息哀求，他們的哀聲達於神。

到了晨更的時候，耶和華從雲火柱中向埃及的軍兵觀看，使埃及的軍兵混亂了；

論利未說：耶和華啊，你的土明和烏陵都在你的虔誠人那裏。你在瑪撒曾試驗他，在米利巴水與他爭論。

神說：因為他專心愛我，我就要搭救他；因為他知道我的名，我要把他安置在高處。他若求告我，我就應允他；他在急難中，我要與他同在；我要搭救他，使他尊貴。

當日，耶和華這樣拯救以色列人脫離埃及人的手，以色列人看見埃及人的死屍都在海邊了。以色列人看見耶和華向埃及人所行的大事，就敬畏耶和華，又信服他和他的僕人摩西。

「亞倫要歸到他列祖那裏。他必不得入我所賜給以色列人的地；因為在米利巴水，你們違背了我的命。

所以與摩西爭鬧，說：「給我們水喝吧！」摩西對他們說：「你們為甚麼與我爭鬧？為甚麼試探耶和華呢？」百姓在那裏甚渴，要喝水，就向摩西發怨言，說：「你為甚麼將我們從埃及領出來，使我們和我們的兒女並牲畜都渴死呢？」摩西就呼求耶和華說：「我向這百姓怎樣行呢？他們幾乎要拿石頭打死我。」耶和華對摩西說：「你手裏拿着你先前擊打河水的杖，帶領以色列的幾個長老，從百姓面前走過去。我必在何烈的磐石那裏，站在你面前。你要擊打磐石，從磐石裏必有水流出來，使百姓可以喝。」摩西就在以色列的長老眼前這樣行了。他給那地方起名叫瑪撒，又叫米利巴；因以色列人爭鬧，又因他們試探耶和華，說：「耶和華是在我們中間不是？」

眾百姓見雷轟、閃電、角聲、山上冒煙，就都發顫，遠遠地站立，對摩西說：「求你和我們說話，我們必聽；不要神和我們說話，恐怕我們死亡。」摩西對百姓說：「不要懼怕；因為神降臨是要試驗你們，叫你們時常敬畏他，不致犯罪。」於是百姓遠遠地站立；摩西就挨近神所在的幽暗之中。
