角声渐渐地高而又高，摩西就说话，神有声音答应他。

这水名叫米利巴水，是因以色列人向耶和华争闹，耶和华就在他们面前显为圣。

并要在患难之日求告我；我必搭救你，你也要荣耀我。”

法老临近的时候，以色列人举目看见埃及人赶来，就甚惧怕，向耶和华哀求。

过了多年，埃及王死了。以色列人因做苦工，就叹息哀求，他们的哀声达于神。

到了晨更的时候，耶和华从云火柱中向埃及的军兵观看，使埃及的军兵混乱了；

“论利未说：耶和华啊，你的土明和乌陵都在你的虔诚人那里。你在玛撒曾试验他，在米利巴水与他争论。

神说：“因为他专心爱我，我就要搭救他；因为他知道我的名，我要把他安置在高处。他若求告我，我就应允他；他在急难中，我要与他同在；我要搭救他，使他尊贵。

当日，耶和华这样拯救以色列人脱离埃及人的手，以色列人看见埃及人的死尸都在海边了。以色列人看见耶和华向埃及人所行的大事，就敬畏耶和华，又信服他和他的仆人摩西。

“亚伦要归到他列祖那里。他必不得入我所赐给以色列人的地；因为在米利巴水，你们违背了我的命。

所以与摩西争闹，说：“给我们水喝吧！”摩西对他们说：“你们为什么与我争闹？为什么试探耶和华呢？”百姓在那里甚渴，要喝水，就向摩西发怨言，说：“你为什么将我们从埃及领出来，使我们和我们的儿女并牲畜都渴死呢？”摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我向这百姓怎样行呢？他们几乎要拿石头打死我。”耶和华对摩西说：“你手里拿着你先前击打河水的杖，带领以色列的几个长老，从百姓面前走过去。我必在何烈的磐石那里，站在你面前。你要击打磐石，从磐石里必有水流出来，使百姓可以喝。”摩西就在以色列的长老眼前这样行了。他给那地方起名叫玛撒，又叫米利巴；因以色列人争闹，又因他们试探耶和华，说：“耶和华是在我们中间不是？”

众百姓见雷轰、闪电、角声、山上冒烟，就都发颤，远远地站立，对摩西说：“求你和我们说话，我们必听；不要神和我们说话，恐怕我们死亡。”摩西对百姓说：“不要惧怕；因为神降临是要试验你们，叫你们时常敬畏他，不致犯罪。”于是百姓远远地站立；摩西就挨近神所在的幽暗之中。
