As the sound of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the thunder.

These are the Waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and he demonstrated his holiness to them.

Call on me in a day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor me.”

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and there were the Egyptians coming after them! The Israelites were terrified and cried out to the LORD for help.

After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor, they cried out, and their cry for help because of the difficult labor ascended to God.

During the morning watch, the LORD looked down at the Egyptian forces from the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the Egyptian forces into confusion.

He said about Levi: Your Thummim and Urim belong to your faithful one; you tested him at Massah and contended with him at the Waters of Meribah.

Because he has his heart set on me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows my name.When he calls out to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor.

That day the LORD saved Israel from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.When Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and believed in him and in his servant Moses.

“ Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will not enter the land I have given the Israelites, because you both rebelled against my command at the Waters of Meribah.

So the people complained to Moses,“ Give us water to drink.”“ Why are you complaining to me?” Moses replied to them.“ Why are you testing the LORD?”But the people thirsted there for water and grumbled against Moses. They said,“ Why did you ever bring us up from Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”Then Moses cried out to the LORD,“ What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me!”The LORD answered Moses,“ Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you struck the Nile with in your hand and go.I am going to stand there in front of you on the rock at Horeb; when you hit the rock, water will come out of it and the people will drink.” Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the LORD, saying,“ Is the LORD among us or not?”

All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance.“ You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses,“ but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.”Moses responded to the people,“ Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin.”And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.
