They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.

高壇徧設。偶像是崇。輕干天怒。觸迕聖衷。

They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.

They made God angry by going to their high places. They made him jealous by worshiping the statues of their gods.

For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.

He built temples on the high places and appointed as priests people who were not Levites.

You must by all means destroy all the places where the nations you are about to dispossess worship their gods– on the high mountains and hills and under every leafy tree.

They made him jealous with other gods, they enraged him with abhorrent idols.They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known; to new gods who had recently come along, gods your ancestors had not known about.

But they did not obey their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned aside from the path their ancestors had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the LORD’s commands, but they did not.

All who worship idols are ashamed, those who boast about worthless idols. All the gods bow down before him.

You must not worship the LORD your God the way they worship.

Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?

For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

The Israelites again did evil in the LORD’s sight. They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtars, as well as the gods of Syria, Sidon, Moab, the Ammonites, and the Philistines. They abandoned the LORD and did not worship him.

I say this so you will not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the form of any kind of figure. This includes the likeness of a human male or female,any kind of land animal, any bird that flies in the sky,anything that crawls on the ground, or any fish in the deep waters of the earth.When you look up to the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars– the whole heavenly creation– you must not be seduced to worship and serve them, for the LORD your God has assigned them to all the people of the world.You, however, the LORD has selected and brought from Egypt, that iron- smelting furnace, to be his special people as you are today.But the LORD became angry with me because of you and vowed that I would never cross the Jordan nor enter the good land that he is about to give you.So I must die here in this land; I will not cross the Jordan. But you are going over and will possess that good land.Be on guard so that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he has made with you, and that you do not make an image of any kind, just as he has forbidden you.For the LORD your God is a consuming fire; he is a jealous God.After you have produced children and grandchildren and have been in the land a long time, if you become corrupt and make an image of any kind and do other evil things before the LORD your God that enrage him,

“ You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below.You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me,

How long will this go on, O LORD? Will you stay angry forever? How long will your rage burn like fire?

The Israelites did evil before the LORD by worshiping the Baals.They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods– the gods of the nations who lived around them. They worshiped them and made the LORD angry.

I hear my dear people crying out throughout the length and breadth of the land. They are crying,‘ Is the LORD no longer in Zion? Is her divine King no longer there?’” The LORD answers,“ Why then do they provoke me to anger with their images, with their worthless foreign idols?”

you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you. Destroy all their carved images, all their molten images, and demolish their high places.

I brought them to the land which I swore to give them, but whenever they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there and presented the offerings that provoke me to anger. They offered their soothing aroma there and poured out their drink offerings.So I said to them, What is this high place you go to?’”( So it is called“ High Place” to this day.)

He stretched out the form of a hand and grabbed me by a lock of hair on my head. Then a wind lifted me up between the earth and sky and brought me to Jerusalem by means of divine visions, to the door of the inner gate which faces north where the statue which provokes to jealousy was located.Then I perceived that the glory of the God of Israel was there, as in the vision I had seen earlier in the valley.He said to me,“ Son of man, look up toward the north.” So I looked up toward the north, and I noticed to the north of the altar gate was this statue of jealousy at the entrance.

‘ Cursed is the one who makes a carved or metal image– something abhorrent to the LORD, the work of the craftsman– and sets it up in a secret place.’ Then all the people will say,‘ Amen!’

and had warned him about this very thing, so that he would not follow other gods. But he did not obey the LORD’s command.

The LORD was furious with Israel. He said,“ This nation has violated the terms of the agreement I made with their ancestors by disobeying me.

Even now they persist in sin! They make metal images for themselves, idols that they skillfully fashion from their own silver; all of them are nothing but the work of craftsmen! There is a saying about them:“ Those who sacrifice to the calf idol are calf kissers!”
