但他們仍然試探、悖逆至高神，不持守他的法度。

惟彼猶試至上上帝、而悖逆之、不守其法兮、

至高上帝、厥有命令、民再犯之、攖其震怒兮、

斯民仍試探叛逆至上之天主、不肯守天主之法度、

頑梗如故。聖命不從。

But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.

But they tested God. They refused to obey the Most High God. They didn’t keep his laws.

Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies,

But they kept testing and rebelling against God Most High. They did not obey his laws.

But they rebelliously tested the Most High God, for they did not keep his decrees.

Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,

Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, And did not keep His testimonies,

Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, And kept not his testimonies;

But they rebelliously tested the Most High God, for they did not keep His decrees.

Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

Yet they challenged and defied the sovereign God, and did not obey his commands.

The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and served the Baals.They abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; and they provoked Yahweh to anger.

It was so because the children of Israel had sinned against Yahweh their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,and walked in the statutes of the nations whom Yahweh cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they made.The children of Israel secretly did things that were not right against Yahweh their God; and they built high places for themselves in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city;and they set up for themselves pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill, and under every green tree;and there they burned incense in all the high places, as the nations whom Yahweh carried away before them did; and they did wicked things to provoke Yahweh to anger;and they served idols, of which Yahweh had said to them,“ You shall not do this thing.”Yet Yahweh testified to Israel, and to Judah, by every prophet, and every seer, saying,“ Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”Notwithstanding, they would not listen, but hardened their neck, like the neck of their fathers, who didn’t believe in Yahweh their God.They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom Yahweh had commanded them that they should not do like them.They abandoned all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made molten images for themselves, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal.They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger.Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight. There was none left but the tribe of Judah only.Also Judah didn’t keep the commandments of Yahweh their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.Yahweh rejected all the offspring of Israel, afflicted them, and delivered them into the hands of raiders, until he had cast them out of his sight.For he tore Israel from David’s house; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king; and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Yahweh, and made them sin a great sin.The children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they didn’t depart from themuntil Yahweh removed Israel out of his sight, as he said by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation.They moved him to jealousy with strange gods. They provoked him to anger with abominations.They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they didn’t know, to new gods that came up recently, which your fathers didn’t dread.Of the Rock who became your father, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God who gave you birth.Yahweh saw and abhorred, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters.He said,“ I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God. They have provoked me to anger with their vanities. I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

“‘“ But you trusted in your beauty, and played the prostitute because of your renown, and poured out your prostitution on everyone who passed by. It was his.You took some of your garments, and made for yourselves high places decked with various colors, and played the prostitute on them. This shall not happen, neither shall it be.You also took your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself images of men, and played the prostitute with them.You took your embroidered garments, covered them, and set my oil and my incense before them.My bread also which I gave you, fine flour, oil, and honey, with which I fed you, you even set it before them for a pleasant aroma; and so it was,” says the Lord Yahweh.“‘“ Moreover you have taken your sons and your daughters, whom you have borne to me, and you have sacrificed these to them to be devoured. Was your prostitution a small matter,that you have slain my children, and delivered them up, in causing them to pass through the fire to them?In all your abominations and your prostitution you have not remembered the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, and were wallowing in your blood.“‘“ It has happened after all your wickedness. Woe, woe to you!” says the Lord Yahweh,“ that you have built for yourselves a vaulted place, and have made yourselves a lofty place in every street.You have built your lofty place at the head of every way, and have made your beauty an abomination, and have opened your feet to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your prostitution.You have also committed sexual immorality with the Egyptians, your neighbors, great of flesh; and have multiplied your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.

Yahweh said to Moses,“ Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers. This people will rise up and play the prostitute after the strange gods of the land where they go to be among them, and will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them.Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come on them; so that they will say in that day,‘ Haven’t these evils come on us because our God is not among us?’I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods.“ Now therefore write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the children of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.For when I have brought them into the land which I swore to their fathers, flowing with milk and honey, and they have eaten and filled themselves, and grown fat, then they will turn to other gods, and serve them, and despise me, and break my covenant.

They took fortified cities and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.“ Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, cast your law behind their back, killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.
