民猶干罪、逆至上者於野兮、

斯民在野、犯罪愈多、干至上震怒兮、

豈知彼在曠野、仍然得罪天主、依舊背逆至上之主、

群民無饜。厥欲是逞。

But they continued to sin against him. In the desert they refused to obey the Most High God.

Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness.

Yet went they on still to sin against him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

But they continued to sin against Him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

Yet they continued to sin against him, and rebelled against the sovereign One in the desert.

Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.

Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.

But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold.In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test.So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease among them.In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram.Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked.At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal.They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull, which eats grass.They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt,miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.So he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise.They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the Lord.So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the wilderness,make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;they aroused the Lord’s anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them.But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked.This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come.By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord, and trouble came to Moses because of them;

At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you.

Then the Lord told me,“ Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”And the Lord said to me,“ I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed!Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you.So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too.Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.

In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.

“ Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said,‘ They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.’

Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.
