民猶干罪、逆至上者於野兮、

斯民在野、犯罪愈多、干至上震怒兮、

豈知彼在曠野、仍然得罪天主、依舊背逆至上之主、

群民無饜。厥欲是逞。

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.

But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.

They quickly forgot His works; They did not wait for His plan,But became lustfully greedy in the wilderness, And put God to the test in the desert.So He gave them their request, But sent a wasting disease among them.When they became envious of Moses in the camp, And of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And engulfed the company of Abiram.And a fire blazed up in their company; The flame consumed the wicked.They made a calf in Horeb, And worshiped a cast metal image.So they exchanged their glory For the image of an ox that eats grass.They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt,Wonders in the land of Ham, And awesome things by the Red Sea.Therefore He said that He would destroy them, If Moses, His chosen one, had not stood in the gap before Him, To turn away His wrath from destroying them.Then they rejected the pleasant land; They did not believe His word,But grumbled in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.Therefore He swore to them That He would have them fall in the wilderness,And that He would bring down their descendants among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.They also followed Baal peor, And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.So they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And a plague broke out among them.Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, And so the plague was brought to a halt.And it was credited to him as righteousness, To all generations forever.They also provoked Him to wrath at the waters of Meribah, So that it went badly for Moses on their account.

Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to anger, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.

Then the Lord said to me,‘ Arise, go down from here quickly, because your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have behaved corruptly. They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast metal image for themselves.’The Lord also said to me,‘ I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a stubborn people.Leave Me alone, that I may destroy them and wipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’“ So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Lord your God. You had made for yourselves a cast metal image of a calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way that the Lord had commanded you.So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands, and smashed them to pieces before your eyes!Then I fell down before the Lord like the first time, for forty days and nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.For I was afraid of the anger and the rage with which the Lord was angry with you so as to destroy you; but the Lord listened to me that time as well.The Lord was also angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time.And I took your sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.“ Then at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth hattaavah you kept provoking the Lord to anger.

In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wonderful works.

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, As on the day of Massah in the wilderness,“ When your fathers put Me to the test, They tested Me, though they had seen My work.For forty years I was disgusted with that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways.

For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient?And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
