豈知彼在曠野、仍然得罪天主、依舊背逆至上之主、

群民無饜。厥欲是逞。

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.

But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.

They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel,But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert.And he gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul.They envied Moses also in the camp, And Aaron the saint of Jehovah.The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And covered the company of Abiram.And a fire was kindled in their company; The flame burned up the wicked.They made a calf in Horeb, And worshipped a molten image.Thus they changed their glory For the likeness of an ox that eateth grass.They forgat God their Saviour, Who had done great things in Egypt,Wondrous works in the land of Ham, And terrible things by the Red Sea.Therefore he said that he would destroy them, Had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.Yea, they despised the pleasant land, They believed not his word,But murmured in their tents, And hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah.Therefore he sware unto them, That he would overthrow them in the wilderness,And that he would overthrow their seed among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.They joined themselves also unto Baal- peor, And ate the sacrifices of the dead.Thus they provoked him to anger with their doings; And the plague brake in upon them.Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment; And so the plague was stayed.And that was reckoned unto him for righteousness, Unto all generations for evermore.They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, So that it went ill with Moses for their sakes;

Also in Horeb ye provoked Jehovah to wrath, and Jehovah was angry with you to destroy you.

And Jehovah said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people that thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.Furthermore Jehovah spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount was burning with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against Jehovah your God; ye had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which Jehovah had commanded you.And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes.And I fell down before Jehovah, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger.For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith Jehovah was wroth against you to destroy you. But Jehovah hearkened unto me that time also.And Jehovah was very angry with Aaron to destroy him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth- hattaavah, ye provoked Jehovah to wrath.

For all this they sinned still, And believed not in his wondrous works.

Harden not your heart, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness;When your fathers tempted me, Proved me, and saw my work.Forty years long was I grieved with that generation, And said, It is a people that do err in their heart, And they have not known my ways:

For who, when they heard, did provoke? nay, did not all they that came out of Egypt by Moses?And with whom was he displeased forty years? was it not with them that sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that were disobedient?And we see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.
