小撒母耳跟着以利事奉耶和华。那时候，耶和华的话语稀少，异象也不多。

主耶和华说：“日子将到，我要使饥荒降在地上。人饥饿非因无饼，干渴非因无水，而是因为听不到耶和华的话。

这节期就好像在你们手上或额上作的记号，叫你们记得耶和华的律法，祂曾经用大能的手把你们带出埃及。因此，每一年你们都要按时守这节期。

涂在你们房屋上的血是一个记号，我见到这血就会越过你们。我击打埃及的时候，那灾祸不会落到你们身上。

我又让他们遵守我的安息日，作为我与他们之间的记号，好叫他们知道是我耶和华使他们成为圣洁之民。

基甸说：“如果我在你面前蒙恩，求你给我一个凭据，使我知道与我说话的真是你耶和华。

因此，黑夜必笼罩你们，使你们看不见异象；幽暗必临到你们，使你们无法占卜。太阳要因你们而沉落，白昼变为黑夜。

同时，上帝按自己的旨意，用神迹、奇事、各样的异能、圣灵的恩赐和他们一同做见证。

锡安的城门陷入地中，主摧毁、砍断她的门闩。她的君王和首领流落异乡，律法不复存在，她的先知得不到从耶和华而来的异象。

灾祸接踵而至，噩耗不断传来。那时，他们必求问先知，但祭司的教导必消逝，长老们必无计可施。
