Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.

Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice,“ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means“ My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver.You captured us in your net and laid the burden of slavery on our backs.Then you put a leader over us. We went through fire and flood, but you brought us to a place of great abundance.

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.

But those who die in the Lord will live; their bodies will rise again! Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joy! For your life giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead!

He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.He told them,“ My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

“ This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view.

And I said to him,“ Sir, you are the one who knows.” Then he said to me,“ These are the ones who died in the great tribulation. They have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb and made them white.

Won’t you revive us again, so your people can rejoice in you?

For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.

Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman, but I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty nine lashes.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.Who is weak without my feeling that weakness? Who is led astray, and I do not burn with anger?If I must boast, I would rather boast about the things that show how weak I am.God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, who is worthy of eternal praise, knows I am not lying.

Notice that it says“ he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.

But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
