Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.

You have sent many bitter troubles my way. But you will give me new life. Even if I’m almost in the grave, you will bring me back.

You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again.

You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again and lift me up from the depths of the earth.

LORD, I cry out to you all day long; I spread out my hands to you.Do you work wonders for the dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise you? SelahWill your faithful love be declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Abaddon?Will your wonders be known in the darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?But I call to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer meets you.LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you hide your face from me?From my youth, I have been suffering and near death. I suffer your horrors; I am desperate.Your wrath sweeps over me; your terrors destroy me.They surround me like water all day long; they close in on me from every side.You have distanced loved one and neighbor from me; darkness is my only friend.

I waited patiently for the LORD, and he turned to me and heard my cry for help.He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and they will trust in the LORD.

Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.

I have spent a night and a day in the open sea.On frequent journeys, I faced dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own people, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, and dangers among false brothers;toil and hardship, many sleepless nights, hunger and thirst, often without food, cold, and without clothing.Not to mention other things, there is the daily pressure on me: my concern for all the churches.Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?If boasting is necessary, I will boast about my weaknesses.The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is blessed forever, knows I am not lying.

But what does“ he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower parts of the earth?

God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death.
